Public transport with a pet in Mexico City: what each system allows.

The written rule and what happens on the platform don't always match. Metro, Metrobús, Cablebús, the Interurban Train and the apps, one by one, with the source for each rule.

"Can I take my dog on the Metro?" is one of the most searched pet questions in Mexico City. And the honest answer is awkward: it depends what you mean by "can".

Because there are two rules here. The one that's written down, and the one applied on the platform. This article gives you both, system by system, so you arrive knowing where you stand.

Sources last checked: October 11, 2026. If a system changes its rule, what the system says wins.

First: what the rules say

Mexico City's mobility rules prohibit carrying animals on mass public transport, with one clear exception: assistance animals. That's how it's written today.

In practice, several systems tolerate small pets in a closed carrier, and some have said so publicly on social media. But it's tolerance, not a right: it depends on the system, the day, and whoever is at the turnstile.

In August 2026 a bill was introduced in the city congress to explicitly allow pets on public transport. It is not law yet. If it passes, the systems would then have to update their rules.

System by system

Metro. The rules prohibit it; what's tolerated is a fully closed carrier, medium-sized at most, carried on your lap. A dog in your arms or on a lead won't get in. The Metro itself has asked riders to avoid travelling with pets where possible, and there are documented cases of people being turned away. If you're going to try: off-peak hours, closed carrier, and a plan B.

Metrobús. Its official account has said you can travel with a small or medium pet in a closed carrier or bag, with no head or paws sticking out.

Cablebús, Trolebús and RTP buses. The city's Mobility Secretariat has said you can travel with a pet in a carrier. We found no maximum dimensions published by these systems.

Tren Ligero and Tren Suburbano. We found no published rule from either. Ask at the ticket office before going in with your pet, and bring a closed carrier.

El Insurgente Interurban Train (Mexico City–Toluca). The clearest of all. Its 2026 rules allow pets in a rigid, closed carrier of at most 80 × 60 × 30 cm, closed for the whole trip, under the seat or in the luggage rack. No dogs on leads, no cats in arms.

The apps

Uber Pet. Arrived in Mexico City in July 2024. One pet per trip; dogs and cats on a lead, harness or in a carrier, and other animals in a carrier. The fare is higher and there may be a cleaning fee.

DiDi. We found no dedicated pet option. The advice is to contact the driver when the ride is accepted, to confirm before they arrive.

Cabify. Pet in a carrier; confirm with the driver.

One note for all of them: in the car, your dog rides in the back seat, on a harness or lead. And if the driver says no, an argument on the pavement rarely ends well. Better to request another.

Assistance dogs: here there is a right

If your dog is an assistance dog — guide, hearing, service — things are different. Mexico City's Animal Protection and Welfare Law, amended in September 2024, guarantees their access to public and private transport, including dogs in training. Refusing access or charging extra carries a fine. Operators usually ask for the training centre's certificate: always carry it.

Emotional support dogs are not covered by that definition, and there have been documented disputes on the Metrobús. If that's your case, the carrier rule applies.

Making it easier

The carrier is half the journey. Let your pet get to know it beforehand: sleeping in it at home, so it's not an unfamiliar box on the day. Same as we said for flying with your dog.

Choose your hour. A packed carriage is no place for anyone with a carrier, and it's exactly when you're most likely to be turned away.

Have their details on them. If something happens on the way — the carrier opens, they panic at a transfer — a tag with a phone number you'll answer is what brings them back fastest.

For the rest of the city — parks, terraces, rules that actually apply — there's our pet-friendly Mexico City guide.

In Maskotis, today

In Maskotis you can create a QR tag for your pet's collar: whoever scans it sees how to reach you and can let you know, no account needed. And if they ever go missing, you can report them as lost and have a poster ready to share in minutes.

Hopefully you'll never need it. But in a city this size, it's worth having on.
